Silvia was leading a <strong>research project<\/strong> to <strong>assess the systemic risks<\/strong> of major online pornography platforms under the European Union\u2019s <em>Digital Services Act<\/em> (DSA), one of the most important digital regulations today. The aim was to determine whether these platforms complied (or not) with European rules on digital violence against women, human trafficking and sexual exploitation.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-davys-grey-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The research, which combined methods such as <strong>user experience analysis<\/strong> and <strong>digital ethnography<\/strong>, aimed to put forward regulatory recommendations to the <strong>European Commission<\/strong>, grounded in solid data, to shape its public policy. However, the team faced a critical obstacle: <strong>collecting digital data<\/strong> required technical skills the team did not have. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-davys-grey-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Without the support of an experienced team, this task would take many valuable hours and put progress in other key areas of the project at risk. That\u2019s when Silvia gave us a call.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Web scraping to collect the data<\/strong><\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-davys-grey-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">From the very beginning, we identified with the project\u2019s <strong>values<\/strong> and understood the technical challenge Silvia and her team faced in dealing with huge and often opaque platforms. Silvia invited us to take part thanks to the <strong>relationship of trust<\/strong> we had built through previous collaborations on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Digital_commons_(economics)\">digital commons<\/a> projects.<br><br><strong>\u201cWhat I value most about amoved is their sensitivity and their ability to understand the project\u2019s goals. They\u2019re also punctual, organized and precise,\u201d<\/strong> Silvia said when explaining why she chose to work with amoved.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-davys-grey-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">After the initial contact, we structured the collaboration into <strong>three clearly defined phases<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-davys-grey-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Understanding the project:<\/strong> we met with Silvia to understand priorities and define the scope of work. Based on these conversations, we designed a work plan built on <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Web_scraping\">web scraping<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, a method for extracting information from websites automatically and efficiently.<br><br><strong>2. Technical implementation:<\/strong> to collect the data, we developed custom tools (called <em><strong>scripts<\/strong><\/em>) that let us extract the necessary information from the platforms in a structured way while respecting their technical limits. This work included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Collecting the tags and categories visible on the platforms\u2019 home pages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Extracting data on the number of videos associated with key terms, which made it possible to identify patterns and trends.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Organizing all the information in CSV files, a simple and accessible table format.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-davys-grey-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">These tools not only saved the team time but also ensured the data was consistent and reliable.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-davys-grey-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Delivering results:<\/strong> we shared the data in a clear, organized format, which let the team focus on analysis without losing time on technical tasks, and draw conclusions based on real data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-davys-grey-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In the image below, we show you the inner workings of one of the <em>scripts<\/em> we used to extract information from the platforms. This work involved lawyers, sociologists and journalists, who interpreted the data and put forward concrete proposals. Although the results are confidential and not publicly available (so as not to compromise the Commission\u2019s decision-making), <strong>follow us on <a href=\"https:\/\/es.linkedin.com\/company\/amoved\">LinkedIn<\/a><\/strong> if you\u2019d like to keep up with the project\u2019s progress.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-davys-grey-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In our evaluation conversation with Silvia, we identified <strong>three benefits<\/strong> our collaboration brought to the project:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-davys-grey-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">1. <strong>Better use of resources:<\/strong> our work allowed the team to save time and focus on their strengths, such as interpreting data and formulating recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-davys-grey-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">2. <strong>Agile collaboration:<\/strong> we kept direct, smooth communication with Silvia, avoiding unnecessary meetings and making the most of the time available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-davys-grey-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">3. <strong>Key data:<\/strong> the results made it possible to identify patterns in content categories and their relationship with potentially illegal terms, providing evidence for the regulatory recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-davys-grey-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI hope to have amoved on board from the start in future projects,\u201d<\/strong> Silvia told us. Working with Silvia and her team is always an enriching and motivating experience. It lets us apply our technical skills in an interdisciplinary context and support causes we believe in.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-davys-grey-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">One of our strengths (and passions) is working hand in hand with interdisciplinary teams, providing technical solutions that complement their areas of expertise.
